THE PLACE · VILLA LA ANGOSTURA

At the end of the world, between water and forest

One lake. A forest that remembers. Las Balsas has occupied this shore on Lago Nahuel Huapi since 1988, long before remoteness became something to seek.

Three things define it — the water in front, the forest behind, and the house that stands between the two. Not amenities. Not features. Not selling points. Simply what is.

THE LAKE · NAHUEL HUAPI

It doesn´t dominate the landscape. It defines it.

The lake is never the same twice. Some mornings it mirrors the sky in perfect stillness. Other days it moves softly against the shore. Its colour shifts through the day: deep indigo at dawn, jade at noon, hammered silver at dusk.

In Mapuche, Nahuel Huapi means “island of the jaguar.” Glacial in origin, it spans 557 km² and reaches depths of 464 metres — one of the largest lakes in the Patagonian Andes. Too vast to take in from a single point.

THE FOREST · VALDIVIAN TEMPERATE RAINFOREST

Step beyond the house and the air changes.

Coihue, arrayán, cypress. Earth after rain. Behind the hotel, the Valdivian temperate rainforest begins without ceremony. Arrayán trees with cinnamon-coloured bark and centuries of growth.

In autumn, the canopy turns. In winter, everything stills. In summer, the forest comes alive. The forest reveals itself slowly — birdlife, amphibians, and native species that have long made this hillside their habitat. Paths extend in every direction, inviting exploration at your own pace.

THE FOREST · PRIVATE NATURE RESERVE

A reserve built around what was already here.

Of Las Balsas' 15 hectares, 14 are native Patagonian habitat with minimal human impact. The largest portion — 10.7 hectares — is wetland: a low-valley mallín combining sedges, semi-aquatic species, and native woodland dominated by ñire and luma. This wetland is part of a much larger system of hundreds of hectares, with significant biological activity that bridges the qualities of forest and marsh.

The remaining 3.3 hectares are a mixed coihue forest, relatively young — regenerating after a fire that occurred roughly 90 years ago. What looks established is still in the process of becoming.

THE SEASONS

No two stays feel the same. Summer stretches long by the water. Autumn turns the forest amber and gold. Winter arrives in silence. Spring returns in bloom and light.

THE HOUSE

Built as a home.
Never quite stopped
being one.

THE HOUSE · HERITAGE

Since 1988

Las Balsas began as a lakeside home overlooking Lake Nahuel Huapi. Designed for family life and long conversations by the water, it opened its doors to guests seeking that same sense of warmth and belonging.

Built when little existed here, its creation required rethinking what was possible in this landscape. In time, its singular character led it to become the first Relais & Châteaux in Argentina. The house remains shaped by the spirit that brought it to life, its evolution never altering its essence, only extending it.

THE HOUSE · ARCHITECTURE

Architecture in dialogue

Conceived in dialogue with the water, Las Balsas was designed as a home where scale, materials, and orientation embrace the view and Patagonia’s shifting light.

Over time, that same architectural philosophy extended to a collection of villas set within the forest and along the slope, guided by the same intention: openness, warmth, and connection to the landscape — where architecture does not compete with nature, but quietly frames it.

THE HOUSE · LOCATION

A place apart

Located in Villa La Angostura, within Northern Patagonia’s lake district, Las Balsas offers both seclusion and access. Surrounded by forest and water, it feels quietly removed from the world — yet remains easily reached and deeply connected to its surroundings.

Here, distance is measured not in kilometres, but in atmosphere: a slower rhythm, clearer light, and a landscape that shapes the way each day unfolds.

CONSERVATION & STEWARDSHIP

In balance with nature

This place gives us everything — and caring for it is simply part of how we live and host.

A quiet commitment that shapes what happens behind the scenes, in how we source, protect, and preserve the landscape that makes this corner of Patagonia feel so untouched and alive.
